Contract states that any defects will be fixed at expense of the contractor ;D

How can the client claim defects?
The contractor delivered precisely what they clearly stated they would deliver at the start of the process.

You'll get situations such as that with CreditSuisse & Lloyds. Loads of agents field the roles, and put you forwards. But the guys at Hyphen will try to fill them internally and only use the other agent's candidates if they struggle.

Unless you knew that, it looks like you're not dong very well - but in reality if you went forwards through Hyphen directly you may well have got the gig.

I'm getting up at 3 am tomorrow to go 300 miles for an interview... for a £365 job.

I've also just been to Sainsbury's for some new boxers.

So yes - everything is pants...

Quite standard in the industry so what's your point?

Did you already do a phone interview?
It's hard, but I say no to any F2F unless it's local. Phone interview first, then F2F.
On my last 2 contracts the agent asked for F2F, I said no, but agreed to do it after phone interview. Both offered me the contract after the call. Agent said one customer has never done that before.
                  Fiscal nomad it's legal.

You're siding with the contractor only because its a contractor forum. I sense BIG conflict of interest
