My recollections of counting nerve endings from dim & distant Biology classes involved creating a grid matrix on the skin area to be tested with a pen, blindfolding the person wot is to be tested and then use a pin to prick the dots of the grid recording a hit or miss a la battleships - i.e. did he (for they were always a he) feel it - thus the sensitivity and therefore the amount of nerve endings within the area can be deduced
