Give me a decent (real) leather sofa any day - At least you can wipe it clean and it won't accumulate dust and crumbs and bugs and God knows what inside, and you can always cover it with fabric.

But in any case when viewing a house, why are you bothered about superficial things like the current owners' furniture and wall hangings, or even decor, when all these can easily be changed?

Often an indicator of undesirable things that can't be easily changed. uPVC windows to name but one. Another place I struck off my list had already of the above plus a bathroom that looked like it was from the set of Barberella .

Why would someone putting in a leather sofa think "I know, I'll replace my windows at the same time?"

It's all a matter of taste and I'm probably a terrible snob.

A mate of mine does house clearances & he got me a few rolls of pine effect wallpaper that I've run up in the kitchen.

Looks really cool, particularly when topped off with cork ceiling tiles

Think those textured white ones supported by a metal lattice look much better

I'd say all what the OP describes isn't contemporary at all. It's the defacto standard to make new builds look cutting edge. It's hard to go anywhere that isn't selling this stuff. That alone should mean its not contemporary. Some of it with the right furniture can look nice. More often than that it looks like it nearly worked... But didn't. Especially when it's got some outlandish Stainless Steel light from BHS.

Well if it's presently commonplace, surely that makes it contemporary doesn't it?
