The System
In answer to the question about who keeps joint accounts and who doesn't, I developed what I consider to be a very fair system for our joint finances;
We total up our joint expenses, basically anything which we share equally, including a sum for joint savings. Then we calculate a proportionate payment of this total based on salary. At the time this was developed by adding our two salaries together we derived a 60/40 split. That is I earn 60% of our total income and therefore pay 60% of our expenses total. Anything left over stays in our seperate accounts.
The thing is now that my wife just gave birth and I just started a contract position which changes the above equation considerably. Even though my wife is getting maternity pay, I think there is a very good chance that she will want to stay home for some time after her full maternity pay runs out. A decision which I support. Hence, this system is very likely to change.
Whilst we were using the system we both found it very effective.
