I have no other job to go to at the moment but I am on the verge of resigning (3 months notice), not sure if its a mid-life crisis and will pass, or if I should just go with it and quit ?
Just get yourself a couple of kids, mortgage and wife ( ex-wife would be better ). That'll soon dispel any notion of quitting the rat race.

Seriously though. Do you think that any job would be more rewarding than IT? They are all dull. That is the nature of working for someone else. If it was interesting it would be re-branded as "entertainment" and you would have to pay them to do it.

The problem with starting again in a different field is that you have to start at the bottom. Would you really want to do that?

What Tom says, all work is tulip, Mrs SM works in catering and comes home and tells me all about the back biting and bitching and issues, I tell her "your only buttering a few rolls how difficult can it be" very few jobs will ever be perfect unless your totally into it however you spend a third of your life in work so you need to either make the most of it or find something else to do.

I love my work but I just see it as a means to an end I would rather be doing building work than IT but at my age the building game is hard graft compared with IT so I Purchased a tulip hole and spend my evenings and weekends fixing it up, when I first started I had 3 months off then took an easy life contract just up the road

Variety is the spice of life fill your evenings and weekends with quality activities you want to do then the 9 to 5 slog is a little easier

Work to live not live to work, it's far better

Working as a Gynecologist would be good, well paid and spend your time with your finger on the pulse
Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the abject worship of the state.

No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

The majority of your customers will be about 90 years old and be suffering from some sort of bed sore or urinary disorder. Are you sure that's what you want?

When I was a permie I did a bit of countryside volunteering, as I was getting a bit sick of the rat race so just wanted to see 'what else was out there'.

One guy I was talking to absolutely loved his job, outside all day, seeing all the seasons and nature etc. His salary was about £12k, he lived in a trailer park, and had the constant threat of redundancy hanging over him (Public sector cuts, applying for your own job etc.) So point is in this example he was living to work, not the other way round.

Sounds like you just need a few months off to me, that's the beauty of contracting.

And this is it. If you're this age and have a wife and kids, your responsibilities and liabilities will become the crushing factor to your dreams. On the bright side, they (the kids anyway) are the reason for my happiness and joy each time I come home knackered in the evenings. So it's OK.

I'm also sick of IT. I mean, I love computers etc but the game has changed too much since I started and it's all about cheap offshoring and cost cutting rather than greenfield projects and growth, and frankly I can't (don't want to) keep up with the skillset changes. I've had enough.

I've spent the past 10 years contracting and have always viewed it as a bonus in my working life. I have invested most of my earnings as far as possible, which will give me the opportunity to step back, take time out and review my life plan when my current (final) contract ends this year. My investments will pay for the family upkeep in the meantime, allowing me to focus on what I should do with the rest of my life.

A pension wouldn't have allowed that because I would have had to wait until 55 to sit back, hence I don't have a pension.

So if you're feeling like you want to 'quit', engineer a way out of the game, out of the rat race. Only you (and your wife) can do this - no one else can do it for you. It's not easy and it will take years, but the sooner you start, the better.

                    Good luck buddy.

^ Totally this. You have to play the long game, take some chances and have a modicum of luck thrown in. The future of IT is dull, low paid, highly taxed and in Bobland.
