v is entirely correct. This link shows that medicine and nursing are by far the most difficult courses to get into. Only about 12% of applicants succeed.NOT that we spent years under investing in training
Most Competitive University Courses - Which are the hardest to get onto?
"Competition for undergraduate places medical" in Google shows various colleges describing competition as fierce or intense or extremely high on the first page.
It is correct too that this problem has existed for decades. This from 1999:
BBC News | Health | Nurse degree applications upHowever, many of the applicants may be disappointed, as there can be fierce competition for places.
King's College London is a leading centre for nurse training. Last year it received 555 applications for its four-year nursing studies degree. It had 40 places available.
...
The college's three-year diploma course had 1,200 applications for 340 places last year.
It is that much easier for those from overseas as standards are not so high and that may be why so many more are struck off.
Foreign doctors should face tougher exams, study says - BBC News
European doctors three times more likely to be struck off: GMC - Telegraph
As regards less skilled workers, those bum wipers in care homes. it is not an even playing field either. Anyone in the UK wanting such work has to pass CRB checks on background. Such checks cannot be made for many migrants regarding time before entry to the UK. Some care homes have even been found employing illegals. Funny. I distinctly remember doing a summer job picking fruit. Must be mistaken.Originally posted by Euler View PostDon't know about bum wiping, but no, the fruit was not picked before it was easy to get EU workers (note they were trying to get foreign students to do the job):

Possibly the reason there are lots of furrin' doctors is because a lot, probably the majority, of the UK qualified ones are leaving...

I find it interesting that the argument against immigration is "recruit locally". Except the UK has full employment, more or less.
If you send the immigrants packing, there's no-one to replace them.

Looks like you'll need that bum wiper sooner rather than later since you seem to be either senile or drunk.Originally posted by xoggoth View Postv is entirely correct. This link shows that medicine and nursing are by far the most difficult courses to get into. Only about 12% of applicants succeed.

Your 2 points in this post seem to be:
1. It's really hard to become a doctor. Who knew, what a shocker. What do you suggest, make it easier so that the average UKIP supporter can become one?
Because that seems to be the only way you'll get totally 100 per cent UK doctors.
2. So CRB checks are the reason UK people don't want to be bum wipers? Does that apply to being fruit pickers? and cleaners too? Or patio layers? Or painters? Because there seems to be a shortage of a whole host of occupations in London. The only people who respond to adverts are Eastern European as I know from experience.
Fact is there is full employment in London and we need more workers, both skilled and unskilled.Last edited by Euler; 9 April 2015, 20:21.Are you a loser?
