No Socialist Government conducting the entire life and industry of the country could afford to allow free, sharp, or violently-worded expressions of public discontent.

The attitude of their representatives who post on CUK is also a complete turn off, they portray the organisation as arrogant, self serving and deceitful.
If that's your opinion then of course you are fully entitled to express it. My opinion is that you're wrong and don't fully understand what you are talking about, but hey, life would be boring if we all agreed on everything.

One question, though - given a free hand, what would you do differently to protect and improve the lot of the jobbing contractor?

Anyone else thinking about standing? There are still fewer candidates than spaces. Don't leave it till the last minute - it takes a little bit of time to get everything in place.

Are you going over to the Dark Side? If so, I sincerely hope that you don't forget what PCG, in its original form, stood for, as opposed to being an Insurance Sales organisation?

When I first joined them in 2001, the forums there were active, they had a commitment to lobby against IR35 and S660 and I felt "part" of what was a dynamic crowd.

imho - times at IPSE have changed...

I was an IPSE Consultative Council Member, until the BoD abolished it. I am not an IPSE Member, since they have no longer have any relevance to me, as an IT Contractor. Read my lips...I recommend QDOS for ALL your Insurance requirements (Contact me for a referral code).

Are we allowed to campaign on here for our preferred candidates?

Although I'm a relative noob to contracting so don't remember the good ol' days, I broadly agree with you, as it seems does a proportion of the membership who've chosen to express an opinion. If you're not a member, you won't see my candidate statement, but he reason I have decided to stand is because of concern that some of the new focus may be detrimental to the core membership.

A couple of hundred quid and you can join today and get yourself elected to get your voice heard too.

...and as a Day 1 joiner (near as damn it), I can assure you that the core values of PCG I joined up for are still to the front of IPSE: I wouldn't still be there if they weren't. To a large extent IR35 is seen as a done deal in Westminster and while IPSE remain committed to removing it from the landscape, right now banging on about it to the exclusion of everything else would be actually hugely counter-productive. The current IPSE approach is highly effective but also a lot more subtle.

However, keeping the focus fresh is important and that's why we need new blood unencumbered by the baggage of the old gits like me (and those ex-members who are still stuck back in 1999 of course..). We need people to challenge the status quo from today's viewpoint, so if you are teed off about something that IPSE can deal with, get stuck in.

I think it's a shame that trying to join the consultative council of IPSE is seen as the dark side. Like it or not, IPSE have claimed the mandate to represent the 1.7 million independent professionals and the 2.8 million self-employed. Like it or not, they lobby on issues and are listened to - I don't believe it is a coincidence that some of the things that IPSE called for in the manifesto have already come to pass by chance.

If you aren't happy with how the organisation is doing things, then you have a choice - you can either try to influence from within or you whinge from outside. And the best places to influence from within are the CC and the board.

And as ms says - a couple of hundred quid today looks like you could well become part of something that does have influence within the organisation.
