Your (and their) problem with definition is caused by the global resistance to non-secularism. When all Muslims of every nationality adopt, accept and respect the laws of most civilised 21st century societies and seperate their religion from their laws, society and government and then drag those things up to the same 21st century level from the 3rd century, then the problem of definition goes away.
