Same principle if I'm in a crowded bar. First round I tip the guy/gal behind the bar a tenner. That way I never have to wait to be served for the rest of the night.

For a serviced based economy, the frustration only every seems to grow and grow. Normally not a problem until we return to the UK. From the queues (good grief, a part of you just forgets), to price of train fares whilst standing.

This was supposed to be a feel good, positive thread about great British service. Now I feel depressed.

So someone comes to your property to install the new washing machine they should
                a) Turn up when expected
                b) Not moan about having to work for a living
                c) Do the best job they can.
                d) be polite and courteous

                In return they should expect
                a) You to be polite and courteous
                b) You to listen to reason when things do not go to plan for circumstances outside of anyones control
                c) You to offer them a cup of tea/coffee.
                d) You to not complain about things which did not happen to try and get a bit of free money
Sometimes it's right to reward good service, positive reinforcement.

It depends purely on the culture rather than common sense In some countries waiters would be unimpressed to be offered a tip.

                      ...

                      I always give a tip.

It's usually based on perceived wisdom along the lines of....

'Don't let your wife use your Barclaycard'

                      or

After the first letter from the CSA, demand a paternity test.
