    SPOILSPORT

It was more amusing when you didn't explain it.

I was trying to see how many DM stories I could find and link to the thread.

Well previous governments just imported staff and now as we have the EU we can import more doctors - who cares if they can't speak English so kill people.

It seems something happens along the way to those with good motivations. Either the only way to get to a position of power is to play the game and by the time you "win" this changes you, or the self-interested ones get to the top through being willing to use more trickery.

          There's a great quote in Hitch-hiker's Guide I can't find about this.

Thier motivation changes the moment they are appointed. It becomes two-fold; how can I max the take and how can I max the length of my tenure. Everything else becomes secondary.

I think they mostly believe they can do both. Help the country and feather their nests at the same time. Then, slowly but surely , the feathering becomes more important as they realise they can do f*** all squared about the first

Rubbish. You don't flick a switch and stop caring.

I'm sure it's the same with doctors and teachers - you see old weary ones who don't seem to give a crap anymore and maybe they really don't. But that's because they've been worn down, not because they didn't care to start with.

Money and power are very powerful to anyone but the strongest. They can erode very quietly without you realising and then of course if you DO make a small indiscretion, those around you with less ethics can use that against you and it's a bitter spiral.

It was when, in his words, these "Johnny come latelys" were talking about "our country" and "our NHS".

Though, to his credit, he said he wouldn't have a problem if they'd been here 20 years and had made a contribution so it wasn't really a racist comment. And I can feel like that sometimes - not necessarily when watching QT but there have been a couple of incidents that have left me thinking "Hey.. this is MY country, not YOURS" but there you go....

Bullsh**t. What they say and what they mean are worlds apart. They may well kid themselves that they are doing what they do for the benefit of others and on certain levels this is probably true. However once they have the power of influence and the attention of the electorate they become their natural selves boosted by the sense of importance they gain. This then embodies itself in satisfying their own prejudices, issues and attitudes. The caring for others is then exposed as the pretence it always was.

If these people genuinely wanted to do good they would join volunteer organisations to help people in need. They don't because ultimately they crave attention and power, something that only being good at sport business or entertainment they could otherwise achieve. The fact that they dress up their position as people who "want to change the world" is utter rubbish.

Because they have a mandate of power bestowed upon them they develop a sense of divine righteousness, developing an opinion on everything that they think they can impose upon everyone else. one of the advantages of privileged people such as etonians coming to Parliament is that they tend not to suffer from the feelings of inferiority that drives many MPs (particularly lefties). the downside of these people is that they believe that they were born to rule and give jobs to their mates.

The ones who are driven by a genuine desire to do good rarely make it to the top. the ones who we have to listen to are in their position by virtue of the fact that they are single minded politicians. By this stage they have shed the yolk of wanting to change the world and exchanged such principles for self interest.

You only have to look at a golf club to see how this manifests itself on a smaller scale. Apparently decent people join golf clubs on the basis of wanting to enjoy themselves and enjoy the company of others. Sucked in by the power of the committee room their worst characteristics emerge exposing the seemingly well meaning "decent blokes" into the petty little Hitlers they always were.

I refer to the current batch (90's onwards) of career politicians. You may have seen me bemoan here before about the lack of even a single statesman (or person) in British politics.
