Trial Period On Contract?

It's common, but it doesn't mean you have to leave it in the contract. If you really want one of these other contracts then try to negotiate it's removal on the basis that you already have an existing contract in place and it would be an unacceptable risk to go for a new one without some security. The real issue here is that these other two agencies have headhunted you but they know they need a get-out clause in case they made a mistake in contracting you. They're taking a chance and they're trying to cover their asses.



These two other agencies sound like chancers. In my opinion, you should stick with the current contract and see if there is a renewal or a similar contract with the same client or through the same agency. This way you establish a working relationship, rather than play to these other agents game and cause bad feeling with your current client and your agent.



It's a normal short term contract. You may find it is renewed in 3 month instalments. Some clients limit contracts to three months because they're not certain about budgets and timescales etc. Stick with it.

Ok so from what I gather 3 months is the norm and everything is negotiable.

The reason why I'm willing to cut out my current contract early is because managent has stated that they hired too many contractors and have already let go of 2 other contractors out of a group of 10 they initially hired.

Call me skittish but I'm not exactly being used to my potential here so I figure there really isn't much incentive to keep me and I know there's almost no chance of a renewal seeing as they're not assigning any new work but just waiting for the existing contracts to expire.

To be honest I think they'd be relieved for me to give notice. I can't imagine that they enjoy paying me to sit around and twiddle my thumbs. I figure I must be meeting some quota for a double minority or something.

I'd have thought coming from a place that introduced the whole concept of 'flexible and mobile workforce' and allows only 2 weeks' paid holidays, you would not have minded about the 7/14-day trial period that may or may not be right for you. And why not ? You are probably also unaware that there is a 3-MONTH trial period for 'permanent' staff (well, in name only, as there is no such thing as permanent jobs here) during or at the end of one, anyone that can be deemed unsuitable is asked to leave. I detect from your tone that you wish that Amnerican citizens wish to be exempted from that too. You may also wish that we provide you with free accommodation, transport, etc. Maybe George should have a word with his mate Tony who would be happy to oblige. For the record, any American that I have come across (contractor or perm) mainly in the investment bank sector think they are better than anyone else, so you are no exception Tracy.

Whether I'm better than anyone else I work with is irrelevant. If I was in Timbuktu I would negotiate a contract that was beneficial to me. But then again we don't think you get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.
