Make sure you get the interviewers details.
Once you get the job, dig in hard for 400+. If you are getting messed about, consider contacting client, saying thanks for your time and offer, really excited about the role, bit dissappointed about the rate dropping 25%, has the role been downgraded to less responsibility/more junior ?
This is naughty and the agent will go ballistic when he finds out so be sure you have the spuds to do this and/or you are prepared to walk.
If you go in at 350, find out the agent is taking your pants down, it will sting and its 10k + a year difference....

It's always possible it is a genuine mistake but I think I'd endorse the idea of going to the interview and then chasing the rate after - but being prepared to walk if they won't budge if £350 genuinely isn't a rate you would take. I guess that's the question though - if the job was advertised at £350 would you have applied?

Based on recent personal experience there is a strong chance that the agent is maximising their margin......but equally, especially considering that you have yet to attend interview, there is the possibility that there is no funny business and they simply got the rate wrong/took a punt and client won't pay that much/realised that the initially advertised rate won't work for them/feel they are in a strong enough position with you to offer less (delete as appropriate)

In my case, and there are differences of note, I spoke to the Client as I felt that the Agent was up to no good......and they were, Client was grateful I contacted them and we got it all sorted.....and just getting my extension paperwork prepared

          YMMV

No luck trying to get through to pimp using another person - apparently always away from their desk.

I think that's how I'm going to have to play it - ask their client what rate band they are targeting as I'm getting two different messages.

You are jumping the gun: wait until they want you and be prepared to walk away.

Noone is going to want you if you are deemed to be a volatile desperado.

+1. You get the contract, then you negotiate the rate. The fact is that you asked for £450, you have an interview. Everything is now irrelevant until the interview is done and the client wants you..

Bringing up rate with the client is a big no-no, especially at interview.

I'm getting a lot if conflicting opinions. I'm also about to go to an interview having no idea what the real salary band is.

I'm going to follow your advice and get interview done and see what agency has to say. I won't bring up the rates in interview (although someone above said their client appreciated it). Hmm...

If you don't mind wasting a day, I would be inclined to go to the interview and if offered quote whatever you want to quote as a daily rate. If it gets knocked back, you could always send the client thanking them for their time and for their offer of work, which you would have been happy to accept at the advertised daily rate of £450 pd, but you completely understand their commercial position and wish them all the best in filling the role and bringing the project to a successful conclusion. Etc.
