Notice Period At End Of Contract

My position is that I am on a 4 week notice period on current contract which ends in 3 or so weeks, and whilst waiting to hear about re-newal have secured another contract elsewhere, which I am deciding to take. So do I have to work the full 4 more week notice (which would therefore include 1 week extension) or can I run down the 3 weeks to end of contract ?

In other words does a contract notice period only apply mid contract, if contractor wants to terminate early, or does it apply to when a contract is due to naturally end and contractor does not wish to renew (if available) ?

Surely you can't give notice beyond the end date you're contracted to? That wouldn't make sense.

You don't give "notice" of not renewing; it's not your choice anyway, it's up to the client to offer a renewal. It can't really come as a surprise to them that the contract is ending (although given some of the PMs I have to work with...). If they offer a renewal, decline politely and move on; if it's a week to go and they've said nothing then tell them you won't be renewing.

You're not an employee, you are paid to do a piece of work and then stop. No more, no less.

I'm sure there was a post on here recently where some silly client co was panicking demanding the full notice period even when someone wasn't renewing and expected them to work past the end date.

It just doesn't work like that as the others have said.

Of course not, if it ends it ends. If they offer you a renewal at 4-59pm on your last day you can decide not to accept and thats it.

Unfortunately, I have met clients who think that you still have to give notice. Really. Had one who could never be arsed to sort out renewals because they though I couldn't just leave anyway.

And BTW, they can't withhold payment anyway regardless.

Yeh like I said I've had that said to me by client. I thought they were joking but they really thought I couldnt just leave at the end of the contract.

They were useless at sorting out renewals there just seemed to be no go in them. I was there for a while but I was forever sticking stuff in a box on friday, sticking it in my car and then having to drag it all back out.

The guy who dealt with renewals was in another office but I found out that he wasnt bothered about me leaving because he thought I couldnt just walk out and drop them it because I had to give notice anyway. #majorunderstandingfailure
