I'm sure other folk have moved from permie to contracting without risking their home, I would probably get my notice down to 2 weeks or even a week, if that doesn't do it then I will have to start saving for 3 months worth of income.

Get the biggest overdraft facility the bank will give you, and see if you can get a couple of credit cards with large limits. That's what I did when I took the plunge, and fortunately found a job after two weeks. It took another 3 weeks until I got any of the money thanks to a few admin cockups (it'll be worse if you're paid monthly), I had lots of travelling expenses, and my old permie job decided not to pay me for the last month I worked. So it was a bit of a tough few weeks financially speaking.

A couple of months of earning nearly double what I was before and it all seemed like a distant bad dream.

Maybe you can get a payment holiday on the mortgage?

I a side note. I had to go permy during the downturn. I basically needed to go contracting again.. (divorce-need the money) Secured a contract with ASAP start - went to my boss and explained the situation. Left at the end of that day with a support contract for my old employer. Still billing them a grand a month
