Nothing Left to do - New contract

So 3 weeks into this contract and then bamm!!! nothing left to do - This is supposed to be a 4 months contract. - i know i can play arround acting like im doing work etc. but i dont want that - i actually want to do something . - Its just like they brought me in to feel the chair space lol...

Anyways - would you ask your manager in a playful way- "Pete any work for me to do?"

This is the perfect opportunity to learn a new, or build on an existing, skill and get paid for it. I’m sure others will give conflicting advice based on the ethics/morals of it, but personally, opportunities like this rarely come about and I would absolutely make the most of it.

If they're paying you when there's no work then that suggests employment and being inside IR35.

It suggests a dopey client rather than there being control and direction.

If they're not called Pete it could get a bit tricky.

Thats exactly what I've been doing for 2 years at this contract. The first week there was loads to do but finished it so fast and then I asked what should I do now? and my boss said "just make it look like your doing work".

Yes i know - but when you are in an Open floor office people deliberatly looking at your monitor - it becomes very difficult to learn anything - the only solution is copy a 10 GB file from one server to another back and forth . leave that visible on your screen. : its so sad but i would like to do something so my day could run really fast...

It can get a bit too much, you reach the point where reading blogs and forums (proper work ones, not CUK) becomes boring and you just have to find some other position or sit clock watching all day. It's one thing being self motivated but eventually the pointlessness of it all gets to you and even the occasional bit of real work becomes a chore.

This last bit is a weird but true one. I was in my first job for 2 years, but by the second year I could (at a push) easily get a weeks worth of work done in a day leaving me hours each week with nothing to do. At first I tried to fill my time, but by the time I needed to leave, I could barely be bothered to do the bare minimum. It's strange - the less you have to do, the more motivation it takes to do it!
