    Contractor Time Keeping Query

    Hi all,

This is my first post so I am hoping someone can answer my question....

This morning I got pulled into a meeting room by my manager screaming at me because my timesheet was incorrect and he threatened to not sign another until I sorted out my time keeping.

Basically the hours I do are 08:00 and leave work at 16:00 but I log off my laptop at 15:51 everyday and am out the office just before 16:00. The thing is I work for a large company and the actual building is massive so I am still "on-site" within my hours.

He has complained that I am leaving too early and gone loopy over it.

Can someone advise if I am right or is right?

Thanks for any help on this.

      Seriously? Let's pretend you're not a trolling sockie for a moment ....

I pay you to WORK for 7.5 hours per day. I don't pay you to arrive at 8, get a coffee, boot your machine up, then start work. I don't pay you to stop working 10 minutes before you're 'day' ends because you feel you need some extra time to walk to your car/bus stop/train. That's your time, not mine.

        Ninja/Boo/Fusion,

Check your contract. If it says that you can be onsite but not working for 8 hours a day then point this out to him and spend 8 hours a day in the canteen trolling on the business forums etc.

If it says that they are paying you to work for those 8 hours then apologise and get back to it.

If it is not really specified then spend 4 hours working and 4 hours relaxing, it is the only way to cover your bases.

I agree that in terms of your contract, you are there to work the agreed hours.

What is totally unacceptable is that your "Manager" screams at you - sounds like he/she is a twunty person who hasn't much experience of managing people and has prejudice towards contractors / just doesn't like you.

Personally, I find this objectionable and would be looking for another role unless he/she is an approachable person. If so, then I would make the point that it is not acceptable to be screamed at and apologise for my timekeeping and work-to-rule.

            Screaming = not on

But find it strange that OP logs off at 15-51 eaxctly... Thats just weird to be this precise.

You didn't mention what time you get in and what your philosophy on lunch is. Are you doing..

              8 - 4 = 8 hours lunch included
              7.30 - 4 = 8 hour lunch not included

Peronally if you are doing the first then that is just sloppy and a bollocking shouldn't be unexpected.

If you are doing the latter then you should be logging off at 16:01, not 10 mins before. That is also sloppy and should expect some 'feedback' depending on your gig.

If you work in a busy office and people tend to work a little over then your style will stand out like a sore thumb and not only will the manager have to deal with you leaving early but there is all the other people that will get ticked off as well so double the pressure on him to act.

Either way, clock watching to this level as a professional contractor is just stupid and this conversation was due to happen at some point or other. Am sure other will come on and point out you are paid for 8 hours no more yadda yadda but come on.. 9 minutes more just to portray a slightly more professional attitude than others around you isn't a lot to ask is it?

Whether he is right or wrong is it really worth jeopardising a contract over these number? IMO he is right but there you go.

Sorry, but you sound like an idle, clock watching slacker to me. Permie might be a better description.
