Asked for a doctor's certificate contractor

Reading through the stories here made me think of a time where I was contracting and missed about a week with the flu.

I told them I was returning on x day and the agency asks me for a doctor's certificate. I had to laugh.

I ignored the request but I really wanted to say, are you planning on paying me for those days?

Have you been asked for a doctor's certificate when you are not an employee?

I don't think I would be overly happy to find out my IR35 position just got a whole lot worse. Saying that not even sure if I believe this.

Nobody has ever asked your for a doctor's certificate as a contractor?

It hasn't happened often but it has happened a couple of times for me.

No, I've never heard of it and I don't believe it either.

It might be a difference in countries.
Do permies have to provide a certificate in the UK? It has been many years since I worked in the UK. I've been working in Australia, Canada, and the US.

Here's an extract from a short term contract I had last year.

If it had happened, I would have ignored it!
Not worried about IR35 as I don't earn a lot and what I do mainly goes into a pension.

"In the event that a Consultant will be absent due to illness, the Supplier must inform xxxx and the
Client immediately for each day that the Consultant will not be attending the Client’s site, unless the
Consultant has a doctor’s certificate in which case the Supplier must forward a copy of the certificate to
xxxx and the Client and will not need to inform xxxx and the Client for each day the certificate
            covers."

So, yes, I believe the OP!

It's a case of the agency or supplier not trusting the contractor to tell the truth.

They must be some lying contractors out there.......

I had agency tell me that they had to authorise any time off for me as well.
I told them I'd clear it with client and then tell them if they were really that bothered.

So, I informed client (just made sure they were OK) then told agent. They still emailed back and said, yes we're happy to authorise that time off. FFS.

Next time I just didn't tell them - they get to see my timesheets after all....

Nope, never. Have had a contract that said one must be provided blah, blah, blah years ago but said take it out and they agreed without quibble.

If you're regularly being asked for one then, you must be acting like an employee. I've never had a client or agent ask for one when I've been in contract.
