I've worked in and out of London. Generally, I've found the quality of people I worked with in the city is lower than outside. The reason is that in the sticks, there are only a few decent employers, so the good people in the area go there. The employers have the pick of the best. In London, there's so many people and so many employers that even crap people can get a reasonable job.
Years ago, I worked for British Gas. It was noticeable that the London mob, despite being on higher grades (for retention, so they could be paid more for the same work as the non-London staff) were less competent - when any of us went on secondment there, they were desperate to keep us.
I now work for a client in an office on the 6th floor of a modern building, with views across the Rhein into the Schwarzwald.
