Working outside the city (London)...?

Get a gig at Barclays in Radbroke Hall. Great drive giving it the berries through the countryside to get there, count how many Lambo's, ferraries etc pass you on the way in through Alderly. Do a mornings work then go sit on the croquet lawn with your lunch in the sun watching the ladies go by. Great stuff. Gig and rates are rubbish and likely to get kicked out on your arse about November but can't have it all LOL.

Would never want to work in London, although it's no further than some of the other places I've commuted to. I'm based in Northants, currently WFH for a client based in Leicestershire. Have done Peterborough and Marlow recently prior to that. TBH, nothing beats a home-based job for me.

Me neither. Fact is I positively discourage agents from contacting me about anything further south than Brum.

If you're fed up with London, you're fed up with life is what they say.
What I say is you can try Oxford, Cambridge for some cool startups, then the North (Manchestet, Leeds etc) and failing that look somewhere in mainland Europe.

I've worked in a few places in the UK and although London was fine, the stress and hassle of just getting to and from work wasn't whereas the work was easy. You would get to work filthy from the underground, smelling of other peoples farts and other unsavoury body odours. I worked at the DHSS in Elephant and Castle and we could look into the shopping center from the office whereupon one day we saw one of the female securtiy guards getting a beating from some rather unsavoury people. If I had to work after 6 I would call a cab rather than risk the tube. Now that was a tuliphole but then Wellingborough wasn't much better...

Very true comments from both esteemed posters. There are other gigs that have neither of these stoppers that still allow a spirited blast through the countryside... That's more that I was getting at. Good points from both though!

A lot of the better rates in the North are a result of trying to open the role to a wider market i.e. Southerners need to pay travel and accommodation to get up here too.

Advance train tickets aren't that much cheaper on the East Coast line from Leeds or York if you want to travel Monday and Friday. Best value I found was a monthly travel card, but needed to come home during the week to make it pay.

Agree with others who say they would rather get a few quid less up here than more down there. IMO it needs to be £150/day extra to consider it.

Train tickets from South Wales to London are well weird.

Turn up in the morning and catch a peak time train is nigh on £150 return. But a 5 day mon-fri return is about £250.

For that price, £50 a day, I've always wondered if its worth a daily commute. Under 2 hours to Paddington (but then of course there is potential tube journey).

4 hours per day train kip! (Would be ok if first class was that price mind).

Elephant and Castle has always been a tuliphole. They have spent lots of money over decades on it and it's still one. Now it has the addition of a bit of gun crime.

The rule of thumb of working in any city is if that local area has a recent history of gun crime then don't work there as not only is there is the risk you may have to stay there late one evening but things could go off during the day.
