Company asking to bring their own laptop for office work

    Hi,

I am contractor based in Southampton. I recently got a contract after a long interview process, recruitment agencies has asked me to bring my laptop for work as company doesn't provide machines to Contractor.

I find it very strange. Is any contractor has faced similar kind of situation in their career ? I would really appreciate someone can advice me on this.

    Thanks

I would LOVE it if my company was asked to bring in it's own computer.

So yes, if that's part of the contract then your company should provide it's own.

You are a contractor now - there is no career, there is business.

This is a good thing as it helps with IR35 statues if it gets that far, I would however suggest making use of VM's rather than exposing your own primary machine to ClinetCo's Group Policy etc etc

Agreed, though where I plug my Mac Book Air into the ethernet I don't know. Magic probably or some sort to wireless or I'd have to buy the adapter....

Permies (hidden or otherwise) EXPECT to use company equipment
Contractors bring their own tools unless there are reasons that we cannot, for example, standard builds, connectivity, security etc

You wouldn't get a builder to come in to do some work and expect him to use your tools? If you had some requirement to use special tools you might provide them to him but in general expect him to use his own.

Are you aware of IR35 at all?

I had this happen when I worked for one of large consultancies. They did a scan of the laptop to make sure that there was nothing nasty lurking which may hurt their network but as has been said, it is a useful defence against IR35

Nothing odd about this, it is actually a very good thing.

Have you checked out the guides on the right hand side? They are full of useful info.

There's a big push for "Bring your own device" you'll probaly remote desktop / citrix into a corporate build unless its a really small outfit.

You may get stung for your own software licenses too.
