Is this a recruiter's way of saying: "your CV didn't get picked so sod off bothering me"?

Could be a host of reasons. It could be he has just played you like a fiddle for your CV and 2 references.. Could be the client raised the need with the agent but has finance/sign off problems...

Whatever reason that role is dead to you know. Forget it and move on.

I once had a position put on hold. I renewed where I was. 3 months later the role came live again and I got the gig.

So it might come live again. But yiu have to assume it is dead.

Funny thing is, I was once offered a live role which I turned down. 3 months later the role came live again and the agent phoned me up. I mentioned that I had in fact turned the role down 3 months prior, so thought the client would still be pretty pi55ed at the mention of my name (especially as we'd gone through two interviews before I'd said 'no thanks'.) Strangely, they weren't pi55ed at all and offered the job without ever re-interviewing; ended up with an extension out of it too.

Contracting. Crazy, sometimes.

I had a role offered to me for a very small consultancy working for an Investment Bank. As I was in a permie role at the time I could afford to hang around. It was put on hold for nearly 4 weeks, while they were waiting for the bank to sign the PO. The roll eventually started. Just ask for the reasons and make a call as to whether you believe them or not. 70% chance its dead

You will probably never know exactly what did happen so don't fret about it, just move on. Keep the contact number of the client handy though.

Yep. If client agrees that role can go ahead then agent already has a list of suitable candidates lined up within minutes. If client never goes ahead with role, then agents lost nothing, got a few more CVs, and doesnt care that hes wasted the time of the contractors.
