Thanks for all that info Scoobos, very helpful.

I see it's your opinion that it's not the right time to go contracting unless I save the money within my limited company till later. However, this may just be from a HMRC point of view - in my field and areas of expertise, contracting is a very buoyant market at the moment and is set to be for some time, so it's a matter of weighing things up I guess. And by going contracting, I can make double what I can make in a permanent role.

SueEllen - I'll keep this concise - your posts are unconstructive and appear to be aimed at belittling me while trying to make yourself appear authoritative on the board. I have used the search facility hence the references I have made to other posts which you have clearly missed and also the questions I have not asked which you have completely failed to telepathically read my mind regarding. If my searches missed things already discussed, then maybe as a newbie I was not aware of the search terms to use, hence this topic!!

Everyone else, thanks again for all your help so far, I have made great progress is setting up my contracting situation and now have PI insurance, PEI insurance (inc. full IR35 cover), and am in correspondence with an accountant. I am also clear on what to do regarding my mother as company secretary, VAT registration, and the concepts behind tax deductible expenses.

            Thanks Neo.

I'm pleased to hear the market is good for you too, I wrongly assumed we were all feeling the pinch - its been bleak for me, other than going offshore (AGAIN) to work

How do you base this bouyancy? Agents flood the jobsites during lean periods to harvest CV's, lots of ads doesn't mean lots of jobs!

Also factor in a couple of months a year off, contract hunting, it happens to us all, I had a gap of 7 months with nothing.

Job sites? Ads? When did I mention those? Try 5 job offers.

                  Also, use the search facility:
                  http://forums.contractoruk.com/busin...ob-offers.html

I'm qualified and marketable - therefore, the market is buoyant for me. However, I appreciate software development is a broad area where some devs are finding it difficult due to having the wrong skills. If you're a front office dev in investment banking, feel free to e-mail me privately, and I will gladly help you out on which technological areas to focus on in order to increase your marketability. If you're not a dev, then unfortunately it is unlikely I'll be able to help.

Theres a fine line between confidence and arrogance.

IB is niche, I've worked in financials and know how hard to break into it was, and also how taking a non financial contract puts you back to "GO".

It's tough out there for a lot of people, more so after Lloyds this week.

Hmmm. five job offers eh. Permie then, not the same as contracting.
