Building a website - Software Development Query

    Hi,

I have a few business ideas that I want to explore.

Are there resources available where you can learn build a website with some advanced software features by yourself or would I need to hire somebody to build this for me?

by advanced I mean saving urls etc

    Cheers

p.s. not sure if the above makes sense!

    Hi,

I built a website from scratch, including creating/buying the URLs via a company called 1&1 (1&1 Internet - Home). They have a load of templates based on a variety of business types, and you can modify as you wish, which is all explained and very simple to do.
They often have special offers too where you can get a few months free (I have no association with the company by the way, I just found their software very easy to use).

    Good luck

        Like to build a website

        have some "advanced features"

        1. a "search box" where you cut and paste a url into and then this saves the page
        2. allow users to register
        3. security/confidentiality etc.

Can a not IT bod (my experience is in project management) build the such a site. Other posters mentions 1+1, are there any others?

If I was going to add features to at a later date, is there a particular software/application I should use?

        Cheers

Hope it makes more sense now

Well you are going to need some kind of database for that and you are going to have to sign the thing about storing customers data, I forget what it is. I would also personally make sure security is well covered, not just a simple open text password system etc. Also from a business perspective there is nothing worse than a home made site so a fail to start with unless you are a genius. Using standard templates also stands out a mile so will get people clicking off.

I would say listening to your explaination you are going to have to get someone to do this for you. You could do it yourself but it is going to take ages and be riddled with problems. Get it created and get it up as quick as poss then spend your time marketing it.

Might also be worth getting this moved to technical not business/contracts...

You haven't yet said what you want the website to be.

Is a blog with articles (use wordpress)

an ecommerce site (pick one of the various options and use that)

a database with a web front end

              or something clever

Until you explain a little about what you want no one will be able to point you in the right direction because saying I want a website is like saying I've got some wood and some nails how do I build a car.

I want the website to be able to compare stuff, like "go compare" type website.

Though it would need a box where I could enter a url and it would be saved on profile

The site wouldn't taken payment, act more as the Intermediary

                That make sense?

Up to the point when you say enter url because believe me most people haven't got a clue what a url is. They set their home page to google and then search for what they want*

Actually if their use IE they use Bing or Yahoo to search for google and then search for what they want.

Developing a website equivalent to gocompare.com would take quite a few months.

Just curious... how much would you consider a reasonable day rate to pay? Let's say £400 per day.

Now let's guess (without knowing hardly any detail) that the site would take 3 months to develop as a bare minimum (which is approx 65 working days).

                    You'd be looking at paying someone £400 * 65 days = £26,000.

^^This^^ is just a guess. You might get lucky and find someone who will do it for peanuts, and have it riddled with bugs.

WNLUKS, i also think if you had a crack at doing this yourself it would take you ages. It all depends how much time you have to spare (and how much patience you have while learning to code!)

                    Good luck anyway
