First week it was smart shirt, trousers, jacket...jacket taken off once at work.
Second week to about 3 months in, it was shirt, trousers, shoes making me one of the smartest in the office.
3 months in and more adept to the environment as one of the team, wore what everyone else was wearing.
6 months in and I don't really think anyone would bat an eyelid if I turned up in speedos, as they now know I can do the job.
You need to be smarter early on and change to the environment as time goes on. If you dress like a tramp too early on then it could mean you're too cocky, or not bothered. Too smart and you're after the bosses job. My mantra is to dress as not to stand out initially and then adapt to the environment, whether it be jeans and teeshirt or shiny suit and hair gel.
I aim to fit in with the people that matter, the MD, owner, and other senior people who actually have the power dress smart and wear ties. I dont aim to fit in with the wage slaves or seem as one of them.
A good, well-fitting man's suit hides a lot of sins.
So you either:
1. need your suits made for you if you have a body shape that isn't average, OR
2.you need help in choosing one. This help you will get in a more up market suit shop.

In my latest (new) contract, it has been suggested that i should be wearing smart business attire like others (permies and contractors) at client co.
Just look at the "smart business attire" that the permatozoa wear: Tasteless, polyester and beige... often with a vilely stained Marks and Spencer tie.

They get the ties as Xmas presents.
I use to be guilty of that as a child...

Depends on your job role I suppose.
Wearing a suit and tie, when all developers are dressed casual just makes you stick out IMHO.
People can see through the BS of trying to "look smart" as well.

Just imagine that "the people that matter, the MD, owner, and other senior people who actually have the power" are more interested in the quality of the code that you produce rather than in your "dress". Do you have a decent tie collection?
