I wouldn't even consider doing a double commute. It has to be close to Euston otherwise not even worth considering.

Exactly my point. Fortunately, there is a lot of work within easy range of Euston. People seem to have taken offence over my comments about Canary Wharf and Hounslow, but I was just pulling out examples of places in "London" which are actually a full-length commute away from Euston, which really is London.

All the places you have mentioned apart from Watford are all really London.

However if you are commenting about the City of London then state the "City" so people know what you are talking about. If you are talking about central London then talk about "central London". There are lots of tourists who visit places that aren't in central London.

Oh and if you live in London i.e. in one of the 33 boroughs then you will find that even places in your own borough can take longer to get to by public transport than somewhere in a neighbouring borough or even central London.

So what? You can get to Watford on the tube if you want to, but it's not London. Obviously Canary Wharf and Hounslow are both treated as being London (those were just examples), but most big cities have a large central area and then a hugely extended zone, outside the 'suburbs' even, which keeps expanding as the years go by. Those areas aren't what outsiders would class as being London if they came for a visit to see the sights.

I've worked in both Canary Wharf and Hounslow and felt as remote from London there as I do when I'm at home up North. Central London is a big enough area anyway. If you're going to commute into London daily from another city, there's little point in doing a double-commute by going all the way out to some godforsaken satellite town which happens to be stuck on the far limit of the London Transport network.

Well, maybe I'm not making my point clearly or something. I lived in London for 15 years (in Wandsworth). After watching the Millennium new year fireworks display in 2000, me and my ten-year-old son walked home (with thousands of others walking along the way) from Westminster. Canary Wharf is about the same distance the other direction - fair enough - but Hounslow is twice the distance. Hounslow is as far from Central London as Croydon, or Gravesend, or Enfield. These are part of 'Greater London'. Greater London is a region of England. You might as well say that Whitby is in York, because Whitby is in Yorkshire.

It can take literally hours to cross Greater London. This thread is about the practicality of commuting from Manchester to London to work. The Manchester-London bit is easy, but if you then add on another major commute to one of the distant boroughs of Greater London then it becomes too much. And I would include Wandsworth and Canary Wharf as being out of comfortable range. Could be done, but would be a real pain in the arse from Euston every day. That's the point I'm trying to make. Badly, it seems.
