ClientCo cancel external email from today

    Morning,

This has never happened to me in the many years i've been contracting.

This morning I came in to find an email - ClientCo are cancelling all contractors access to external email. From this evening, we will be able to neither receive nor send emails to external email addresses.

    Is this a new thing?
    Does it happen elsewhere?

Funny thing is, I can see their point. In today's world (smart-phone etc) I can happily get by with using my phone for emails and I guess if there are unscrupulous contractors emailing sensitive data out of the company they'd want to put a stop to it.

Plus, it must be better for IR35 purposes - not having access to ClientCo's facilities, proving not an employee etc.

    Thoughts anyone?

Seem to have duplicated the post - so I'm deleting it.

What a very sensible, mature, well-thought-out, risk-based decision.

Clearly a highly intellectual beancounter has thought long and hard about this. They considered all the pros and cons and come to a most sensible decision: to stick their own head right up their arse so far that they can can tulip nonsense out of their ears.

      What a bunch of tossers.

      Your ClientCo:

Let me guess ... followed by a 2nd email saying all web access by contractors is being logged too. Yes? That one I have come across, but their first idea was (hopefully) uniquely stupid, yes.

They aren't stopping you using their email completely though? You can still email other people internally?

Logging web-access makes far more sense, but then you'd expect many companies to do that for all access on their network. It's fairly clear people can't be trusted not to spend all day on silly websites...

We haven't had that one yet - but I will expect on Monday I guess. It would mean my time here on CUK would sadly be diminished.

I did post an actual comment (rather than "errr"), but managed to post it twice, so tried to delete this one (hence the "errr").

Just my luck that the "errr" garnishes the most replies whereas my actual comment doesn't.

Yes, true. And seeing as they're paying me to work and I don't actually need external email, I don't mind. I just wondered if this is the way forward for many companies in the future.

Just to add to the confusion, I've merged your threads.

So now when data is being stolen, it has to be copied to a usb stick?

I try not to use the clients email for personal emails, not sure who is reading them. The thing that annoys me is most client block webmail (gmail etc), so I have to use my phone which is not as user friendly.
