Are they a dodgy lot to work for as a developer?

I started one gig recently only for the project to get canned shortly after.

I got an offer at another one only for the project to get canned before I started.

Both MS 'Gold' partners, makes me a bit wary of them in future.

I have to say I have nothing to do with these but I can't see how it is any reflection on how the company works or the stability of the work they secure. You can work with a Global leader in an industry and they can projects or you can work for Smith and sons two man venture round the corner and projects get canned. It isn't uncommon at the time....

Maybe the gold partners see more work due to their status so more will get canned but the ratio of good work to canned work will be the same as a none partner not getting much work???

Also many of these Gold Partners are SME's with < 100 people. They're more likely to can a project if no ROI can be identified or it disappears for some reason.

They're just more careful with their money than the big boys. The risk is there but as you have experienced the money is too once the project is on firm ground...

Large corporates will plough a few mill into a project over a few years and then decide its not worth it, SME's can't afford to waste a few thousand.

I've seen an 75M project go for years and then still not get off the ground.

Should have seen the contractors milk that one, I was perm and not on the project, very frustrating.

Not really - I've recently got my fingers slightly singed with a MGP, you really need a few of these types of client in order to spread the risk and run a couple of their projects in parallel.

And also posting my losses (which I don't have to do, do I?) - really just proof of how volatile these places are. I'm really going to tread carefully with these shysters in future.

Still I can enjoy what's left of the Sun this week before the bank holiday washout

Again, they're not all shysters - you can still work with them - you just have to have a different business model and spread the risk by having a number of them as clients.
