That's a terminatable offence at almost every client I've ever worked at. I really hope you asked them first!

Can't remember a contract where this wasn't the same as well.

Better to leave them to accumulate in the Inbox and have a relaxing few hours on day 1 back in office.

When I was permie I found being totally out of contact re-enforced just how valuable I was and how they were in the sht without me.

              He's on the fiddle.

That's why he hasn't taken his holiday and that is why he wants to stay in touch with the office while he is away. It is so he can keep an eye out and keep people away from discovering whatever it is he is up to.

Most of my contracts are on sites where no information is allowed out of the building and the networked PC's are locked down - so no external email/internet access etc...
                Suits me fine!
Also, I take the month of August off, so if any problems have arisen, they've usually been fixed/forgotten by the time I get back
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

Surely you just set an autoreply saying that you are not contactable, specifying when you'll be back, and giving the name of someone else in the office who can be contacted for anything that can't wait.

And if there is no such person in the office, that is a warning sign.

I really can't understand people cannot leave their work at work.

I really feel sorry for those who go away on a break and take their work with them.

My last gig I worked with someone who admitted he was a "weekend dad" not because he was separated/divorced but because he worked long hours, even working when he got home in the evening.

If you can't organise your day properly and get your work done within that day then you need to reassess your working practices.

If I happen to be off (organised of course not to coincide with any project deadlines) then I'm off and will not deal with any work related items till I get back to work.

I half agree with this but there are two different people here and you are tarring both with the same brush. Yes there are the workaholics who can't get it all done in a day, yes men, poor delegators etc. we all know someone like this and we do feel sorry for them yes.

Thing is I like to check my mails every so often for peace of mind. I am not invaluable, I don't plan my work so badly I need to check while I am away. I do it to be able to relax that nothing is hitting the fan while I am away. A quick scan, quick reply job done. Lie back and relax. Nothing more than that.

I think the difference between these two groups of people who take mobiles aware is the reason. Some HAVE to take it, the others do it by choice.
