    ******* investment banking

What is it about the investment banking sector that makes it such a closed shop? Job came up yesterday which technically I had a great skills match for, but because no investment banking experience, I don't get a look in. I've found this consistently over the years, can't think of another sector that is so strict on previous experience required!

Technically obviously its the same skill, what you are missing is the ability to deal and handle complete ar$e hole investment bankers, and am not kidding about that, in most places its a cut throat situation, a slip of a tongue with anyone who thinks they are important then you/your manager/your manager’s manager are in big $hit trouble, most likely you'd be .

        Be thankful you missed out.

Investment Banking is a Jungle - don't go there ...

Thats why they give you a wee bit more money - its combat pay - avoid at all costs,

I've always the right skill set. And 6 years of investment banking...although that was 10 years ago. And I've just finished 2 years of retail banking. Oh, and I've 25 years IT experience, 20 of that contracting. And even I can't get past the agents. None of them are prepared to touch my cv as it doesn't state "recent" investment banking.

          It's a laugh, innit.

I've got 10 years in IB, 6.5 of these contracting, I've also screened alot of CV's for contract roles in the IB's. One of the reason they say previous IB experience required is simply there is so much competition for the gig as everyone wants a nice paying gig so they need to cut down the CV's recieved. Also generally the quality of the CV's from people with previous IB experience are so good technically wise that it make sense to go for the candidates who also has the sector experience as well.

I wouldn't say its a closed shop but I agree it's diffcult to get into and if you really want to get in price yourself low to start. I've been overlooked for non IB contracts as well because I've only worked for IB's so it works both ways.

As for there being a lot of tw*ts yeah that true I have met alot, the guy next to me at my current gig is a c**t, today I was so close to telling him 'I wanted to knock him out' but he signs my time sheets , also you get that anywhere, I just think of the ching ching.

nhs, security clearance, legal, public sector, take your pick.

ib is not a closed shop if you want to work there however when supply exceeds demand then pimps can afford to expect more.

                  My career has went

Small Software Houses > Retail Banking > IB > Currently Small Software House

Getting in can be done and the money is great BUT you tend to deal with people who behave like a tired 2 year old who has had their toys stolen.
