    I'd best be off now.

"psychiatrists operate above the law. They can detain ANYONE AT ANY TIME AND FOR NO MORE REASON THAN THEIR STATED OPINION THAT THE PERSON MAY BE A DANGER TO THEMSELVES OR TO OTHERS"

Is that not a good thing?

And it is factually incorrect, you need 2 people to section someone so it should have read "THAN THEIR STATED OPINIONS". I also think, not quite totally sure, you need a proper medical doctor to sign it as well, not just a psychiatrist.

I believe that the periodic assessments are made by people who were not involved with the sectioning so it is not as if one person can come along and say "that man is mad" and then he can keep you locked up for as long as he wants as is painted by that link.

        Not any more.

A doctor and a suitably qualified social worker can section someone in "an emergency". (My brother-in-law earns nicely from night-time call-outs to the cop shop). The term "emergency" seems to mean "when you've been picked up by the rozzers".

But that does only get you locked up for 72 hours before you have to be assessed properly.
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.

What everyone else says: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you".

What we say: "We're paranoid because we were involved in the writing of the systems that gather the evidence from Internet fora ..."

Psychiatrists are proper doctors. Not to be confused with psychologists or psychotherapists who don't need a medical degreee to practice.
