Does a company have a Date of Birth (date of incorporation?) & an NI number - errrr - no!
A letter from a company director (you!) confirming your eligibility to work should be sufficient if you are providing services as a company.
The reality is very different especially if you contract for a bank.
Before starting my current contract, I was asked to provide
copy of passport, proof of address for the last three years and the agency asked to see the originals, references for the last two years including proof I was actually looking for work when I was on the bench..and yes my NI, not sure why they need the NI but had to provide it and at last my company details, I also agreed for them to do a credit check now and upon each renewal.
The contract is for an investment bank but the whole process is outsourced to and managed by Hays although I came through a different agency.
usually I would not agree to all this but in these market conditions and after a few months on the bench I had no choice

I wonder if they go through all this rigmarole when they outsource the work / data to India, as they invariably do.

I had the same experience through Hays, their smoothie sales people promise their clients all that in their SLA's then us contractors have to go through the hassle of providing it all. Hays made me jump through more hoops than when I got security cleared for the Ministry of Defence, LOL!
You can lead a fool to wisdom but you can't make him think.
Agencies are driving me batty over passports. I will provide a scan with dob and passport number and bottom string of numbers (which include dob and passport number) hidden. Most of them accept that happily, although I still don't understand why they ask for it from Ltd. Co. contractors.
But not Hays, oh no, they not only want all the details, but also want it taken into the nearest office to be verified by a rec con before interview!!!! When I asked why a scan wouldn't do the consultant said that they needed to be sure that the photo was of me and that I hadn't changed it!
I refused, of course. Bloody cheek.
There are other agencies apart from Hays and if every agency insisted on contractors going to their nearest office to present their passport before every interview, the planet would get considerably warmer and (more seriously) there'd be millions of copies of passports floating around completely out of the control of their owners.
They also (apparently) do a credit check of the company (but they don't ask permission, oh no, not Hays! Only found out by accident). References for the past 3 years including personal reference to cover time out of work. And NI Number. wtf do they want the NI no for? And if they have that, why do they want to see the passport as well?
Intrusive or what? I know times are hard, but Hays is one to avoid.
