    Busted

Just had the following mail from the agency here. Bugger.

    Hi xx,

Following a review of pay across the industry, Client Co has decided to reduce its rates for Contractors.

The purpose of this email is to provide formal written notice of termination of your current contract Assignment for the supply of services to Client Co. Your current Assignment will now terminate on 14/06/2009.

However, should you agree to the variation in the rate and contract terms below, your Assignment will continue with all other terms unchanged.

·Revised Fee Rate - 0.9 x Existing rate per day

·Clause 9.4 of the Terms shall be amended to read as follows: “Unless varied in the Assignment Schedule or any Addendum/Appendix, AGENCY may terminate the Assignment without cause and for whatever reason by giving written notice of seven (7) calendar days. As an alternative, AGENCY may make to the Contractor a payment, such payment being the amount of charges that would have been invoiced by the Contractor for all working days during the 7-day period of notice.

All other terms and conditions remain the same.

I would be grateful if you would confirm, on behalf of your limited company, acceptance of the above amendment terms in writing as soon as possible and in any event no later than close of business on 22/05/2009.

Acceptance of the above amendment terms, by return email on behalf of your limited company, shall be deemed as a formal acceptance of the variation under the terms of the Assignment.

Hey NickNick that is a bummer but hey dont even think about not signing. Take the rate cut, and as soon as you get another contract hand notice in with the 2 finger salute to your pimp making sure you let him know that its his fault your leaving. I bet the pimp has not cut his %.

Sorry to hear that : not good news.

But 90% of old rate is better than nothing : IMO next year things will be different. Hold on in there!!

Yeah, I think I have two options.

Take the cut (after all it's only for thee last three weeks of my contract)
        or
Maintain my pride and tell them to ram it.

Still unsure which way to go at the moment. (Warchest will last for a few years so money's not the main issue)

Sorry to hear that Nick. No one likes an enforced pay cut.

However, in this current climate, it may could have been much, much worse....

Check with the client that they are indeed cutting rates and that it's not just the agency pulling a fast one.

Ask them if you can work fewer hours for the same hourly rate (or fewer days for the same daily rate). Some clients are quite happy with this, as what they really care about is the budget. It depends on the nature of the contract of course, but if you can do it, it gives more time to work on plan B.

I'm currently working 3-4 days a week for this very reason.

WHS +1. While companies are holding off on IT spend there is a list of projects that need doing that's growing all the time... and when the money's available again they'll be fighting for people to implement them. Future boomed

Happened to me about a year ago with one of the big banks.

What particularly miffed me was the fact that I received notification of my 10% cut on the first day I started!

Despite fighting my corner for a couple of months they wouldn't back down so I left and took a holiday. In hindsight it could have been a disastrous move as whilst I was sat on my sunbed the proverbial hit the fan (Lehman's went under). Luckily I landed a better contract but the rate was the same as the post-cut rate. Much better environment though and I'm still here, for another couple of months at least.

Fingers crossed the market picks up for all concerned as I know how stressful it is (no war chest!).
