I'm going to be turning down an extension on the same or possibly slightly better rate (I have a good reason).

So there are some reasonable gigs still out there.

It ain't necessarily so - if the client has already given you two extensions over the course of a year - and they have very specific plans for a project that you have been very pivotal player and they are very happy with your contribtuion - and they want you to be part of their plans for future projects for the next two years- then contract length , whilst not being absolute of course - is a very good indicator.

      Hope that helps ...

PS The market should be picking up witht he start of the new finanical year looming - good luck to anybody out there in the hunt ?!

        Wish you luck...

I had a similar scenario, been offered an extension, but rate wasnt great and i wanted increase as well. I didnt take any stand and carried on just because i felt market is quite grim after seeing quite a few mates warming benches for a while.

        Not ideal but ..

Current rate is 25 to 30% down on my 'norm' but just about acceptable and given the current climate I would renew but I have plans outside the UK.

At the place I'm working they were advertising until last week. Now they've canned a large number of contractors, many who've renewed at the beginning of the year. So definitely a mixed picture.

Something definitely seems to have changed today.

Been looking for a number of weeks without much luck. Mainly applying for roles and having to chase up pimps who then never call back.

Since thursday my CV has actually made it past a few agents to land on the clients desk (so I'm told anyway). Still having to chase them.

Today I'm studying for an exam so not actively looking at job boards and I get phone calls about 5 new roles all with real job specs emailed to me. Thats more like it!

some companies/orgs honour the length of extension - only if you upset them will they serve notice on you. Generally I agree though, a contract is as long as the notice period although being offered a long contract does build confidence that most probably you`ll be there for quite a while.

Talking about notice periods, I know someone who has wrangled a two month notice period client side recently, yet the contractor themself can give two weeks notice - great setup they`ve got ....and they work from home mostly also
