Currently most continental jobs now require the local language(s) which
prevents most Brits from applying abroad. This means that there are more
contractors than before applying for UK jobs.
Rates have dropped more dramatically in Britain.Everyone speaks English
which means that you are competing against the whole world.
They don’t speak French,Dutch German , Spanish or a Scandanavian language at the Indian scrap yard.
In Belgium for those that speak English,French and Dutch
    THERE IS NO SCRAP YARD.

Heard this said 2001-2003, and look what happened! Never say never.

Reasons to be cheerful (in IT):

        * Few UK graduate developers coming through the ranks. Bad for Britain in the long term, but good for existing UK contractors.
        * Brussels will keep inventing red tape for employers; flexible contractors will continue to be an attractive proposition.
        * The Internet still has a long way to play out. It's massive, but it will get bigger and more important to everyone.
        * IT projects can still (potentially) offer the best returns for companies over any other type of investment.
        * Her Majesty's Government has lots of database applications to build. This work cannot be outsourced for security reasons.
        * Mobile applications are actually happening now in serious numbers.
        Cats are evil.

            Multiple agencies

            Why?

            The people who select
            A) Don't know you
            B) Have lots of others to select from
            C) Don't want hassle from agents about who they should pay a commission to
I wholeheartedly agree that any hassle with a candidate will result in a binned CV; however your reasons don't follow on.

As you say the person selecting the candidate does not know the contractor - however they most likely know the agents and therefore one would expect a decision between agents to be far easier than a decision between candidates. (This will probably simply be down to which is the cheaper route to employ that candidate - unless they have an aversion to a particular agency.)

I don't buy it that an employeer will reject a candidate due to the 'onerous' decision of which agency to call back.

Commiserations. Hope you find something quickly. My client co canned another very large project, the second in 4 weeks! Thankfully my project still has legs in it.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

Because I usually do the hiring at client cos for projects and I don't bin them.

I compare the CVs to find out what bull tulip the agent has put in (or conversely what the other agent as removed as "not relevant" when its the most relevant stuff I want) and go with the agent that got the CV to me first.

Sockpuppet - don't you have to have a job before you hire someone else?
