Can you be canned for being sick?

Are you a permie? Normally I would just expect the customer contact to come over and have a word, or just pull the contract. 2 lots of 2 days though seems a bit harsh though I guess. And the lord said unto John; "come forth and receive eternal life." But John came fifth and won a toaster. -
Yes, they can.Originally posted by stingman123 View PostCan they do this?
It's just happened to me because I was off sick.
There's very little you can do, if anything, apart from to sit back, put your feet up, enjoy Christmas and look for a new gig.Comment

Get Day Night Nurse tablets and a packet of Strepsils. Every serious contractor should have a stash of these when you feel sick but don't want to lose a day's pay.
It sounds like you were properly ill though and not just off with man flu.

If one has a chronic illness (like Diabetes and Asthma), they may need more than just the above.Originally posted by swamp View PostGet Day Night Nurse tablets and a packet of Strepsils. Every serious contractor should have a stash of these when you feel sick but don't want to lose a day's pay.

It is sometimes unavoidable when Sickness beckons. I took a few days off in my previous contract as I was throwing up a bit. Got over it within a few days, but caution to the wind requires time off.If your company is the best place to work in, for a mere £500 p/d, you can advertise here.Comment

Turning up whilst ill is called Presenteeism and is a big worry in the safety community, afterall "the good of the many outway the good of the one"...'elf and safety guruComment

Im not a permie - I thought the orignator was - sorry if this aint the case.
As a contactor you shoould NEVER EVER take a day off sick.
If youre not healthy enough to achieve this - then perhaps contracting aint your cuppa tea.Comment

My clients seem to like it when I'm ill. They save money and the difference in output they see between me working and not is negligible.Rule #76: No excuses. Play like a champion.Comment

So then why do they keep you on? I mean apart from your charm......Originally posted by Xenophon View PostMy clients seem to like it when I'm ill. They save money and the difference in output they see between me working and not is negligible.Comment

I think they should introduce "the sickness test" into IR35 legislation
If you are a permie, then you are far more likely to be off "ill" than a contractor. Better to get a leg off than take a day off.Comment
