I tend to try to get in if I'm ill - I veiw it as an appearance fee. They probably won't get much out of me but at least I tried.
Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

    I preferred version 1!

WHS. I'll always come in if ill. I enjoy infecting the permies. Only had one day off in 6+ yrs contracting and that was for back pain when I physically could not get out of bed.

As a contactor you shoould NEVER EVER take a day off sick.

If youre not healthy enough to achieve this - then perhaps contracting aint your cuppa tea.
That's not really fair - everybody gets sick sometimes. What if a child gives you measles or something else unavoidable?

Rule of thumb, as far as I am aware, is "If you're sick you're in hospital, if not then you're in work"...

I had a problem with my knee a bit ago. I had something swell up inside which meant that I couldn't bend it because it was forcing my knee cap away from the joint if I tried to. I have never been able to touch my toes and so couldn't get dressed. I figured that I should not go to work that day as to do so would have meant boxers only from the waist down. I went to the docs and they decided to syringe my knee and pulled 3 large loads of liquid from the inside of my knee. I was told not to move my knee for the next 24 hours as I might well cripple myself. Getting to and from the car was fun! I decided that I should not go in that day also. All other days have been fair game.

if i'm ill, i'm at home. anything else is just macho BS, not to mention supremely selfish.

i went freelance partly to avoid slave-driver work cultures that reward this kind of cretinous behaviour.

when permies take a sickie there's always an element of doubt in their manager's mind of "are they really?"

If a contractor has to take a day off sick, then they really are ill and there is no doubt about that!

Since I started contracting i think i've had one day off and i did actually come in that morning but one of the managers took one look at me and said i'd be better of at home. Migraine of doom with dizzy spells etc...

Have been sent home before by client to stop my infection spreading to permies. (still billed for that day)

Any sickness in my current gig means a work from home day

I thought contractors didn't do sick days. No work, no pay. Illness is for perms and pimps etc.

How can you tell if a Pimp is sick? When they turn up for work.

Some tulip posted here about being ill. Depends what it is, how far you're travelling and what the client is like.

I've had to take time off due to illness on a fair few contracts (last period was only about 2 months ago) but never ever had a client 'have a word' about absence. In fact one or two have thanked me for not coming in and spreading the illness about.

I can only assume some folk unfortunately are working for tulip clients or they are money grabbers.
