    Rate lowered halfway through contract

In a bit of a sticky situation, a few days ago my agent called to say the company I am contracting to are cutting their costs and as a result all contractors are getting their rates cut by a considerable percentage, now a couple of contractors I work with(through the same agent) are still on the same rate, so I am wondering if the agent is pulling a fast one and charging the same and taking more of a cut from me, if it means cutting all contractors rates means all and not just me, also my contract states the rate for the full term so surely they cant just change it halfway through?

Speak to the client directly to find out if you are indeed being forced to take a rate cut. Nothing better than getting the truth straight from the source.

10% rate cut = do 10% less hours

Dont ya just love comics who come out with this? Clients are wanting the SAME hours \ work for x% LESS money, not x% less work or hours!

Surely you would have the original rate in the contract
(like, in wrting) and any change would require a new
contract, which you are not obliged to take?

If I can't afford to pay a tradesman for number of hours I want him to do the work then he will only do the hours I can afford. Rate cuts seem to indicate managerial control. Better to stick to your guns.

If you can't afford a tradesman you can say "if you can't work at a lower rate I will need to find someone else. He can then decide if he wants to do it at a lower rate or find work elsewhere.

Hmmm....will speak to client tomorrow, I would imagine they would have to amend the contract in some way, if it is the client so be it, its not exactly the time of year to find work, will wait till january and move on.
What would my legal standing be if it turns out it is the agent doing this?
