Should I go Contract?

Hi,

I am currently permanent for a small software house in Slough. Myemployer recently said tht I had to become a contractor. Its a new government legislation or something. To be honest I was not really listening.

They said as a contractor I willget lots of tax breaks so I will be alot better off though they will pay me the same money. Which is great news - I cant wait.

My neighbour sugested this site - said I could lots of info on what stuff I can claim.

I sign on Friday so plse tell me wht I need to do.

ask for 70% extra money if they want you to become a contractor, cos
as a permie they is paying your employers NIC, Holidays, Training, Sick Pay.....etc, it's not worth it man if your getting the same amount.

+ your gonna have expenses like setting up a ltd company / using an
umbrella, also you is need to get the latest contractor bling,
update your wardrobe, trade in the banger for a lambo, cometic surgery,
expensive holidays....... being a contractor is not for christmas mate it's
for life !

Did the deal today - I signed some stuff - but was a bit concerned as I had to fill in "company name". I asked and was told I had to "form a company". How do I go about this? I hope its not too much work - still those tax breaks will make it worthwhile.

Obviously you are not going to listen to our recommendations... telling you how to go and form a company would be fruitless. The only thing I am going to say is do a search on this forum and look at the links on this website.

When I first started contracting, I wasn't this thick!

Man, you are cleverer! Did you ever stop to think what is in it for your boss?

Have confirmed what he was talking about?

Going to make a wee prediction....first sign of trouble you'll be terminated, with no payout. You'll then try to get a contract in market that is about to go into hibernation. You'll up down the job center, and then end up working at Tescos.
