Bloody Contractors!

Hired a contractor for a 2 week contract with the possibility of an extension...
Halfway through the last week we negotiated an extension for a further week. He agreed, I phoned the agency, all was well.

Check my mail this morning and he's decided 'it would be professional to decline the offer', citing personal/family reasons.

Bugger. Took nearly a week to get him through vetting, and the project is half finished - he's walked away with a USB key with the project files (I do have copies, but he will be returning that key if I have anything to do with it). Even if I find someone else in the next 24 hrs they'll never get through the vetting in time.

I've been a contractor for nearly a decade and never seen anyone behave like that.

He probably got another gig for longer duration - just sign him up to a load of magazines to his home address, leave his number as a callback from the VD clinic and do the same for the Gender Change Advice Centre - that should be fine for a few hours. Then unleash Phase 2................

You mean "decide not to be held to an agreement he hadn't signed yet" ?

If your project had been cancelled over the weekend, you would have been just as quick to tell him not to bother coming back in, I suspect.

Exactly. Current client manager dithers all the time on renewals trying to save a day or two of budget. You should of signed him up for a month.

Nah - just made sure I get the data back, and woe betide him if he publishes it anywhere, ie his portfolio. Clientco will sue him back to the stone age.
