Got asked for my last 4 years worth at my current gig - this was well after contract arrived, mind.

Meant asking for a favour from some individuals I hadn't given my best work to!

Really, why bother? I usually just say 'no'. The references aren't for the client anyway.

Otherwise, I just give the public phone number for each company I've worked at in the last 4 years, and put 'HR Department'.

The best one is when they ask for a *technical* reference. All my managers are non-technical, sorry, it wouldn't be any use. Bellends.

How did you get around that latter point?

Thanks to this thread I was prepared
          Same scenario as described before
Pimp: We have a role for which you look like a perfect match
          Pimp: What's your rate?
Vague role which happens to be in my area with the rate I'm looking for
Pimp: asked about a few completely random roles in my CV
Started asking did you report in so and so? no I did not
Me: do you actually have a role? No answer
pimp: Before submitting we need 2 technical references
          Me: Bye bye

Yep, had experience of ROC; they are one of the worst for this type of thing.

Please provide 3 references which must be Belgian.

I made them all agency references as opposed to client. So even if I hadn't been great for them, they wouldn't burn any bridges.

Some former clients I wouldn't trust to wee on me if I was on fire.
