Would you do a crappy short term gig in the hope it would look good from an IR35 point of view? I am in the process of securing my next long term contract but it doesn't start for 6 weeks so in the meantime I was looking to maybe do something to tide me over, the money isn't much of a motivator so is it worth doing purely for IR35 status reasons?

Short term gig for IR35 reasons??
Last edited by Contractor UK; 7 October 2011, 12:13.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson -
From my reading of similar replies on this site, I believe IR35 is assessed on a per-contract basis. So if the terms and working practices of the contract are IR35-compliant, then great. If not, then you will need to pay the tax on the income form the contract appropriately.
It's possible to have several contracts on the go simultaneously, some of which are IR35-friendly, and some not. -

On the other hand any gig is an opportunity to learn something new and make contacts… I wish I hadn’t become so lazy, bench time is bad for the soul.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. The donkey ride season should be starting soon down at the beach... why don't you see if they need any new software that you could do to tide you over?

I took a 6 week gig partly to get fill in a gap up to Christmas and partly because I thought short term would help IR35.
This has now turned into six months with +20% on the rate and given me some useful contacts for the future so I'm glad I didComment

And the short term gig has no bearing on your IR35 "status" if the working practices don't reflect it. Contract by contract basis.Comment
