I was actually a bit shocked as it was not in a joke type way either it had quite a nasty undertone! In the end I just put the phone down.

    Also I have tried the 'I have some in the pipeline' and then when they ask 'who?' I tell them a similar thing of 'not wanting to discuss other opportunities' but then got in a battle of 'why can't you tell me?' then I ask them for the company name of the role they are trying to fill as I can just tell them if I have interviewed/interviewing there, they then tell me they can't tell me and so it goes round and round never ending.

    The thing is that gets me is that I let them make me so angry at times after the call and they are not worth it! What adds to this is when you there looking for a job and really need one they get your hopes up then just waste your time.
    I usually just chuckle and say something like "oh come on, you know why I don't want to discuss other roles/client/agent". Most agent then have a laugh themselves and move on the next line in their script.

    Of course, the agents I know and value never ask such stupid questions anyway.

      This is the point of the conversation where you reply with, "What colour underwear is your wife wearing today?"

        I just say none and when they ask why I tell them that I am not making much of an effort at the moment as I have a pretty big war chest and that is why I will only take the role if it is good and offering a good rate.

          This. The only agent that didn't accept my response was a little toady from Regressive.

            You've got to be prepared for stuff like this. My response would be 'well you're not very good sourcing existing jobs are you, because you're asking me for fracking leads?!'

            I normally tell agents;
            • I've just started looking
            • Lots of roles outside the geographic area I consider
            • Some permanent roles but Im not considering any permie roles
            I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

              If anyone has had any recent bad experiences with Huxley Associates please drop me a PM with the details so I can investigate.

              As an organisation with over 400 employees we won't always get it right, so it's important we learn from our mistakes.

                Much as I have no wish to interfere in your agent bashing I do wonder sometimes why someone with 1 post would resurect a 5 year old thread

                It's a bit sad really - how many first time posters do we get saying something lovely about agents or accountants or brollies or contractors or... well anything really

                  They're agents. They deserve it. It's not as if they're people or anything like that; not real people like us.

                    But it also says a lot about how the industry hasn't really changed - they probably googled, found this thread and didn't even see the initial date in their scramble to relate....
