Your contractors!? How quaint. I wouldnt let any agent know what other roles I'd been contacted about. One piss stupid agent has approached me not once but twice about not one but two different roles he wanted to put me forward for over a period of time (I know for a fact each of these roles there was only one position up for grabs). He also asked if I knew anyone else with the same skills as me who I could give him details of and would also be suited for the same job!

Guess why I didnt give him anyone else's details.

But by and large, a recruiter will always use any tactic to find out who is hiring and who is a potential hirer. Its a sales environment.

Someone replied to me once saying "why cant you just work the roles that are given to you by companies". Unfortunately, agencies dont start up with ready made roles and need to business develop. Otherwise they fail, liquidate and all the contractors lose their pay.
You're all ******* leeches in my humble opinion. You do very little work for the contractor once a job has been secured. I was once at a client for 3.5 years and I discussed every extension with the hiring manager when they came up. But, ever time the agent phoned me with 'good news' as they had negotiated another extension!

After the 3rd time, I got a bit pissed off with this and told them I'd actually discussed this with the hiring manager at least 7 days earlier. But, that didnt stop the thickos saying they'd secured another extension every time they phoned afterwards.

The agent model is ****ed up. I really would rather pay a flat fee of say, £250 for a 26 week contract or £125 for a 13 week contract then, have **** all to do with you for the rest of the contract.

Better still, I'd prefer to source contracts via going direct but unfortunately, too many arseholes in company HR's want an easy life and pass this onto agencies instead.

This e-mail means you have been shortlisted for the role and have made it passed the first stage. I am currently in the process of reviewing the list I have compiled to send to my client.

In the mean time, my client has requested i receive an overview of efforts you have made to secure work elsewhere. They are looking to see how keen you are to get involved in an IT position and want to see how you have been doing it.

Please reply to this e-mail with a list of interviews you have had and interviews you have coming up so i can forward this to my client. Please do include the company name, the manager who interviewed you, the location of the office and the position applied for.

This will allow us to update our record of you and will allow our client to get a better understanding of what type of candidate you are.

Look forward to hearing from you."

        What a crock!

        Sam
An extremely poor attempt to get leads. The problem is, I bet half of the contractors out there will fall for this scam.

I got asked once by an agent (i think it was a Huxley one actually!) if i'd applied for other gigs. "I've got a couple in the pipeline", was the answer I gave. Agent tries to dig deeper to find out where they are, at which point i said, "sorry, I don't discuss business opportunities with others".

If UKIP are the answer, then it must have been a very stupid question.

Huxley sent my CV to a company once without my permission, the director knew me from school, looked my parent's house up in the phone book, got my mobile number and called offering me a job direct.

                  Worked out I suppose.

In my experience, there are some good agencies out there.

But Hoaxley are definitely not one of them.

When I get the question "Can you tell me who you have/currently interviewed with?" I've had it 2 ways.

I normally just say none but I had one agent ask me if that was the case and I had had no interviews then he said "why not what's wrong with you, are you not very good?" I was actually a bit shocked as it was not in a joke type way either it had quite a nasty undertone! In the end I just put the phone down.

Also I have tried the 'I have some in the pipeline' and then when they ask 'who?' I tell them a similar thing of 'not wanting to discuss other opportunities' but then got in a battle of 'why can't you tell me?' then I ask them for the company name of the role they are trying to fill as I can just tell them if I have interviewed/interviewing there, they then tell me they can't tell me and so it goes round and round never ending.

The thing is that gets me is that I let them make me so angry at times after the call and they are not worth it! What adds to this is when you there looking for a job and really need one they get your hopes up then just waste your time.
