Tie every time. But which knot do you use? And how well do you tie it? I tie does not automatically look smart if it is not tied well.

I have a friend who used to work in marketing (successfully, he left because it was to stressful).

He used to wear his tie at half mast, in fact not even that, the knot was almost at his belly. One day I asked him if he really thought that this was better than no tie at all. He honestly replied "yes".

I'm in banking and I've always worn ties to interviews. We don't wear them day to day (it's business casual) but I've always worn them for the interviews. I've intrerviewed a few people myself as well and I think everybody I've interviewed has worn them except for the women.

I spent three years working for Barclays and I always turned up in at least shirt trousers and a full windsor.

May have changed since I worked there.
