How many applications, on an average, to land in a job?

Oh come of it guys, obviously depends on the competition and demand for your skillset.

Throughout my 8 year career, I have made on average 75-100 applications before getting hired. That's the reality of it in the Support world!

Or is it just that you're not very good? ... sorry...

You're right. My skillset is in demand, and so I generally have one application per role. Only in 2000 did it take 3 or 4 applications.

One of my colleague says that for each position the Agents keep two/three (or more) possible candidates till the last moment, so that if one drops out will replace with the other candidate in the shortlist...

With this type of approach neither the candidate nor the Agent is certain which candidate lands in the job.

So, it appears we are left with no option but to keep applying for more positions and take up whichever comes first. Any thoughts?

I quit my permanent job and started contracting in June last year, I looked for three days and landed a contract on my first interview.

I stayed there until last Friday and so far have applied for about fifteen positions so far, five phone calls back along the lines of "you're perfect, we'll pass your details on" and then not hearing anything.

i think someone else mentioned this in another similar post but i'll echo the sentiments (credit to whoever it was, sorry!)

basically, fire and forget. see a job, apply, and keep looking. if you get a call, great, if you can an interview, even better, if you get the job, fantastic. if i kept count, i'd be doing this... (and the missus would be doing this... )

Really depends on market demand and your skillset, and how you interview. 46 interviews seems like alot; you may want to consider practicing with friends/family if you're not having much luck.

After applying for about 2-300 jobs for Oracle DBA , 2 telephone interviews and 1 interview where they were adamant about a specific skill which I lacked.
I am on the bench for 1 month. My CV has been forwarded to about 20 clients but no reply so far. why the hell do they advertise as urgent positions when it is anything but urgent.
