How many applications, on an average, to land in a job?

Each time one contract ends we go hunting for the next contract.

How many applications (assuming each application fulfills the requirement), on an average, does it take to land in the next contract?

    10,20,50?

This may fairly give an idea of how tough the market is now..

I found my last contract after applying for over 20 positions.

Last time, my contract ended and I was going to a conference the next week, so I decreed that I was on holiday and didn't start applying for anything.

I then got hunted down and hired directly by my current client while drinking in the pub after the conference.

    So in my case, zero

Difficult to say, as there are many factors to consider...
In April, I got a contract in one week, after two months break (holiday)...It was under 10 applications for me. One mate spend 4 months on the bench, landed a contract in May...
Now I've applied to over 60 roles and got only one very short contract and one interview...My mate applied to just one single job and got a better contract...

      Contractor's life, I suppose...
      The rest is silence...

5 years or there abouts 4 clients, one application... in the beginning. After first contract I've always been contacted for a job availability - why all the applications?

One short one then one great big long one, rapidly heading into 2008 and the dreaded 24 month rule. Fortunately it's on my doorstep, so no great loss there!

                2005 - 46 applications, 2 interviews, 2 contracts
                2006 - 23 applications, 2 interviews, 2 contracts
2007 - 0 applications, 1 interview, 2 contracts (1 was repeat, the other the agent found me)
Plan A is located just about here.
If that doesn't work, then there's always plan B

Oh come of it guys, obviously depends on the competition and demand for your skillset.

Throughout my 8 year career, I have made on average 75-100 applications before getting hired. That's the reality of it in the Support world!

46 applications I can understand, but interviews?

                    That's just far too many
