Don't be shy about your French, the French won't be! They will either praise your French or condemn it as ridiculous; not necessarily according to whether it is or not. They will do the same for their English.Originally posted by sli_gryn View Postany good sites to start sniffing around for contracts? i'm keen to know what the market over there is like for someone w/ mediocre french and a vague ability to find my own ar5e w/ two hands...
ISTM that there are 3 levels of office use of a language:
1. can fit in like a local.
2. can work in the language, provided that you are taken on as a foreigner. Not expected to win shouting arguments, but can read docs, albeit slowly; and talk in the language to someone with a bit of patience.
3. can not cut it for work. This may apply even if you handle the hotel and the canteen with ease.
If your level is 3, best source is Jobserve.
If your level is 2 or 1, still probably Jobserve. See which agencies regularly look for people in France, and call them. (I have worked for Aston Carter in France, for example, and know they do. This is not spam so don't fscking flame me for it, I'm tying to help).
I'm a bit out of date but I could give you some links
www.01net.com which is the trade paper 01 Informatique;
www.hitechpros.com which includes a job & contract search, but you have to pay to make contact;
but TBH you don't have any use for them: there are agencies looking for people like you, and Jobserve is where they look (and they are probably based in the UK too).God made men. Sam Colt made them equal.Comment

I recently looked into contracting in France. Seemed to me like the French are quite a way behind with IT. Not a lot doing.Comment

You could try Luxembourg. You can easily live in France and commute into Luxembourg. It would give you an opportunity to become fluent as French one of the official languages. The nearest French city is Metz. Thionville is also nearby. There are plenty of contracting opportunities in Luxembourg.I'm alright JackComment

Thanks. Learning French currently, and plan to move to the Loire region in 6 years... so lots of time yet for me! Luxembourg may well be a possibilty for my planned 3-months-per-year gigs to top-up the dining-out & booze coffer.Originally posted by BlasterBates View PostYou could try Luxembourg. ...did occur to me. Switzerland is also a possibility, quite a few opportunities in the French speaking part.
It isn't clear to me what you're looking for in the Loire that you couldn't equally find in German speaking countries (eg Switzerland, Germany), where the contracting market is far easier.I'm alright JackComment

No! Not looking to work in the Loire. Want to live there. Would contract elsewhere. Paris, London, Luxembourg... anywhere, really. As I said, lots of time, yet. And things may well be a bit different by then.Originally posted by BlasterBates View Post...did occur to me. Switzerland is also a possibility, quite a few opportunities in the French speaking part.

They are not really way behind with IT, it's just that nobody sees why they would want an individual contractor. To the clients, a software house is the contractor that they are looking for. To the software house, they do indeed contract expertise to the clients, and they get that expertise by employing it. Having to look outside the house for skills is an admission of failure. So if they do need more skills, they will look for more employees.Originally posted by richard-af View PostI recently looked into contracting in France.
