I've passed that on to my host.

We're back but only till the hacker decides to hit us again as we have no defence. It may buy us more time to get another solution though. All suggestions are welcome.

I assume you have moved away from PHP nuke, or at least upgraded it?

Another CMS solution I have used is www.mamboserver.com, might be worth a look. Also, I have used http://www.dotnetnuke.com/ which is also worth a look.

I did rid the site of the BNP racists when I bought it and perhaps it is one of those but I don't know.
Cough Cough. You never banned me Gerry. This fishy business sounds like the work of Towg to me.

You seem a bit defeatist. There's a host of things you can do including the following:

            1) Proper network segmentation and robust firewalling.
            2) Intrusion prevention software.
            3) Server hardening (including up to date patching).
            4) Defensive coding strategy (if you develop your own software).

Of course, these are just some of the technical measures you can take. You (or your provider), should have the proper management framework in place to ensure your ongoing security regime matches the current threat landscape.
