    EA Rates

I've found enterprise architect rates to lower outside the smoke. But then I'm OK with that as the dirt/noise/muggings/train delays/long commute make me look for gigs outside of our once great capital. Birmingham rates seem pretty stable and there seem to be loads of work in Glasgow for EA's
"Hope your doing fine". My favourite opening line in emails from certain agencies! Not only the fact they can't spell, but who actually says that?

If you removed ALL Tier 2 IT Visa workers from UK overnight I doubt there would be any credible skills shortages anywhere. The only issue this would cause is for recruitment agencies who would lose their access to easy profits via exploitation & have to pay most of the rate to contractors again like they used to!
Really? How many agencies do you think recruit Tier 2 visa workers?

Day rates do not seem to have moved much since 2000.

Probably none in UK. How many Tier 2 Visa specialists do you think there are operating in the UK either locally or offshore (or both where they get they phones rerouted to an offshore location) who bypass the traditional Recruitment agency model? A lot of IT work is clearly no longer advertised in the UK its being advertised quite openly in other parts of the EU though!

I think you may be confusing Tier 2 with ICT?

Seems to apply to the entire economy; permanent wages are also relatively suppressed. I'd be boasting about £600/day in 2002. In 2018, £600/day shouldn't be considered a good rate, but is, for some reason.

The cost of food and goods did drop during the boom years, however food and living costs have risen dramatically the last 8 years and day rates haven't risen to compensate. When you factor in dividend tax and more restrictive contracts then things aren't looking positive.

I think companies milked the Financial Crisis as much as possible with regards to stopping pay rises. This was either deliberate to cut costs or through elevated levels of fear. But profits and the economy have all improved which is why the central banks had to start raising interest rates finally. Maybe contractors should realise this and ask for the higher rates where they should be, but businesses have gotten so used to simply not raising the rates its going to be hard to reverse. The foreign IT worker issue has also escalated. These two issues have kept rates static since the Financial Crisis.

How are you finding rates outside of London? £500/day is still common, which doesn't bode well given that an average senior role could fetch around this mark five to seven years ago. There's a real containment in the market for rates and I've noticed it's a struggle to achieve £600/day outside of London without entering into a senior management role with its associated long hours and responsibility. I'm lucky that I still have the contacts to get a higher rate, but I've noticed some friends packing the game in.

Inflation and cost of living are eroding my take home and I'm not enthused about an imagined future brexit effect which will surely compound the negatives.

Any thoughts on your own experience?
Can't say I agree, looking in 2009-2010 rates went down to 200-250ish, often less, saw stuff advertised at 180. It slowly climbed a couple of years later, and has increased steadily until it hit average is 350 with 400 being high for software dev work, more if you're a specialist or going direct, but have never seen a role 450+ that wasn't an agency scam to harvest CVs. Outside of London of course.

YMMV but rates don't seem to have changed in the past 2-3 years.

Rates in Testing have been stagnant for years. I am on the same now as I was 20 years ago.
