Have just got a role with UNISYS, and it involves BS7858 screening. Any ideas what all this is about and has anyone got any experience of going through similar checks.
Thanks

Its not as involved as Security Clearance. Its more just what any employer does (or should do) when you hand in your CV.

BS7858 requires the following:
* that the company should establish by direct reference to former employers, government departments, educational authorities, etc., with confirmation in writing, a continuous record of employment or history for 10 years or back to school leaving whichever is the shorter, on a month-by-month basis;
* the applicant is required to declare details of all cautions and/or convictions for criminal offences, including motoring offences and pending action not covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974;
* the company must obtain two written character references from two relevant persons with personal knowledge of the person being screened (one should be the most recent employer wherever possible);
* the employer should see original birth certificate and marriage certificate (where relevant), or military service documents or valid full passport; and
* employment should not commence until 5 years screening has been carried out (by telephone if necessary). This provisional employment should last no longer than 16 weeks.
You should be able to meet all the requirements yourself. Get your Co. Sec. to send them a letter confirming that all the relavent checks have been carried out.

Basically it is a pre-emplyment check, it give employers a method to best screen employers before they take them on board. Individuals can also be BS7858 certified, it basically somrthing you can add to you CV.
A lot companies are starting to get members of staff BS7858 Certified to show other businesses whom the company do business with that they take only employ people of 'Good Character'

When checking the previous 5 year employment record, how is unemployment dealt with?
Do you have to visit a solicitor to swear you were out of work?
We aren't employees, we don't have periods of unemployment. We are contractors, we have periods when we go trekking, work on Plan B, get trained in something different.
Or choose not to accept contracts.

Your accountant will be able to verify to the client that your company was still active during that period as they were doing the books.
The client may also want a personal referee such as someone who isn't related to you with a job of good standing, to say you weren't held under her Majesty's pleasure during the time you were not in contracts.
